KNOWLEDGE ANALYSIS

[vc_row 0=””][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text 0=””]

On which subjects is more information needed?

I will need to get more information about marketing, community engagement and community management. We already have had some basic marketing in classes that Hester van der Ent gave us a couple years back. I also need to know more about marketing, community and analytic tools. I need to research as much on (indie) game development and the whole process you go through when developing a game to better understand what is needed and how to best prepare. Last but not least I will also need to gain more information about the behavior of broadcasters to get a better understanding what appeals to them and what makes them interested in playing your game.

Where will the information be found?

For marketing and community I can research books, articles, blogs and videos. I usually like watching a lot of TED talks of inspiring professionals, I feel you get a better understanding of the subject when someone talks about it compared to reading it out of a book. I will check Google, YouTube, TED website, GDC (Game Developers Conference) their website. To gain more information about broadcasters and their behavior I will conduct surveys as well as interview them. I will also watch panels of people in the industry. I obviously also I want to learn from our Community Manager and our Community Lead, from gaining experience while working with them as well as follow their advice on how to tackle certain situations.

Which search terms will I use?

A few of the search terms that I will use are: game development, indie game development, community management, community engagement, marketing analytics, community analytics, social media analytics, marketing for game development, community game development, gaming communities, use of broadcasters in game promotion, working with broadcasters. I will also search for similar search terms that come up during the research that will go into more detailed searches once I get results.

What information is already available?

Obviously there is a bunch of information available about marketing and community management.
I know there are plenty of panels about game development done by people in the industry on game and developer conventions.
I personally know of a few examples of succesful use of broadcasters in game promotion but I want to find more (success) stories.
Because marketing and community are very wide subjects I want to limit myself and research mainly focused on game development marketing and community management.
Since working with only influencers is still fairly new I will search for advice on how to work with any only type of influencer may that be a blogger, Instagrammer or YouTuber.

What information is missing and what does this research add?

This research will help me gain more knowledge about marketing and community management to create a good plan and advice for the company to use broadcasters in an effective and easy way. I want to use this knowledge and combine it with my current knowledge of the broadcasting and game industry and improve my current understanding of them. I feel this will be helpful not just for my internship but also later stages in my life.

Main question

My original main question that I came up with during the Practical analysis was:

  • How can you find the correct broadcasters that will play and stay with your game?

Because of that question I started thinking  how I could work my question into an actual product. What can our game studio but also perhaps other studios use in help of finding the right broadcasters to promote their game? I often see developers not choosing the right influencer’s to promote a game or even a product which makes the effect of that promotion a lot less than it could be. That’s why I think it’s important to have a system that works with tools that can assist them in choosing the right broadcasters in the hope that they will also stick with the game when it’s the right fit. During my time at Proletariat I want to work towards creating that system and create the tools to help game developers work with broadcasters and finding the way to approach them. This system should give better insight on what types of broadcasters exist and what the best ways of contacting them are as well as additional tools that can help improve that contact or offer extra services which generates more interesting. Since there isn’t much information or guides written for this I want to be able to fill that gap or lack of information. The main question I’ll try to answer with my research in order to achieve this goal and make a product is:

How to create a successful system that can be used by multiple game studios to engage with broadcasters?

The sub questions are:

  • What are examples of marketing systems?
  • What types of broadcasters are there?
  • Which social media platforms do these broadcasters use and what are the best ones to reach them?
  • What is the behavioral pattern of broadcasters?
  • What are successful examples of the use of broadcasters for game promotions?
  • What drives broadcasters to play/broadcast your game?
