Desk Research

My desk research will be done by reading articles, marketing research papers, books and blogs. I will also be watching a lot of panels, TED talks and other videos. Because live streaming is still fairly new I will most likely not find anything in books that is why I will heavily depend on video content that is available. I will make sure to use trustworthy websites and resources for my research to get the best and most valuable content. My desk research will be focused on community manament, marketing, (Indie) game development and marketing and PR in games.

Desk research:

  • TED talks: Talks about communities, social media, marketing.
  • Books: Books on marketing.
  • Blogs/Articles: About marketing, community and game development.
  • Panels: Panels done by people from the game industry.
  • Videos: Tips, tutorials or anything inspirational about any of the above mentioned topics.

Field Research

For my field research I’ll be working closely with the community manager and community lead. I’ll be asking them questions and I will learn how to handle situations. Also I hope to improve my knowledge of working with broadcasters by learning their ways. Because I’ll be responsible for contact with the broadcasters I also hope to learn more from the broadcasters themselves.

Field research:

  • Learn from working in the community team.
  • Learn from working with broadcasters.
  • Get to know more about the company and their player base.

Survey

I will take a big survey that I’ll have Twitch broadcasters fill in, I’ll make two seperate ones for broadcasters that are partnered with Twitch (Contract with Twitch) and non partners. I aim get at leats 50 broadcasters per survey to fill them in. I will make us multiplechoice as well as open questions.

Interviews

Once I’ve done the survey I want to interview a select group of broadcasters that gave interesting answers on their survey. Especially for the open questions I am very curious what the replies will be and that should also help me come up with more detailed questions.

Sub questions

For each of my sub questions I have written down where I plan to gather the information that I need to answer them.

  • What are examples of marketing systems?
I will search for marketing systems in books and articles and perhabs videos. I want to gain information that is based on game development so I want to especially look for any marketing systems related to that.
  • What types of broadcasters are there?
To see which broadcasters types there are I’ll be browsing not only Twitch but also other platforms like Hitbox and YouTube Gaming. I also will ask questions in the survey to get more detailed information on what types of games they stream.
  • Which social media platforms do these broadcasters use and what are the best ones to reach them?
I’ll ask this in the survey that I let the broadcasters pick from 5 different platforms like Twitter and Facebook and then let them rate them how likely they are to use it on a scale of 1 to 5.
  • What is the behavioral pattern of broadcasters?
After I received all the results of the surveys and also from the experience I have and will have during my work at Proletariat while working with different broadcasters I will analyze the way they behave. I will look at how they react to contact with developers, how they like to interact with, how they run their stream based on games and other advice they will give me in their interviews.
  • What are successful examples of the use of broadcasters for game promotions?
This will be done by doing research via Google by looking up articles and the Twitch Blog that usually highlights big broadcasters events.
  • What drives broadcasters to play/broadcast your game?
I will ask the broadcasters what makes them play certain games in the survey as well as other advice for developers on having them live stream their game. I will also get additional information from the broadcaster that I will interview.
